Juan Angel Benavides Calderon
Like many farmers in Nicaragua, Juan Angel Benavides Calderon learned many of his skills from his father. Juan became a client of PRODUMER in 2006, when he was 36 years old. He was eager to learn new cultivation techniques in order to reduce costs and provide for the growing needs of his family. Him and his wife had just had their 5th child and were facing higher education costs for their oldest child (14 years old). The growing family suffered a financial setback a year earlier, when Juan was forced to sell his cattle to help pay for an operation for his wife. Juan still has land set aside for cattle, and hopes to be able to purchase cows in the near future.

Juan was first introduced to conservation agriculture while working seasonally in El Salvador. He saw the potential for reduced costs with conservation agriculture and was eager to introduce these practices on his own land with the help of PRODUMER technicians. Along with the reduced costs, Juan has also noticed an increase in yields. Conservation agriculture reduces the need for heavy machinery, therefore reducing soil erosion and improving soil quality.

Juan has now introduced the idea of conservation agriculture to his neighbours. Many neighbours were skeptical of the new practices, but now that they have seen the positive results, these skeptics are now interesting in using the new technologies themselves. Through positive results and a keen interest more farmers are becoming aware of the ability to improve upon their own practices.
